An attempt to alter the venue for the ongoing NPP National Delegates Congress in the Asene Manso Akroso Manso constituency of the Eastern Region has led to confusion causing a delay in the voting process for approximately one hour.
Initially, the Salem Presbyterian Basic School was the official venue communicated to the Electoral Commission. However, there was a last-minute alter to Akroso Senior High School, which resulted in disagreement among stakeholders.
The issue has since been resolved, and voting is now underway at the Salem Presbyterian Basic School, the originally designated venue.
Approximately 21,233 delegates are expected to cast their votes in the Eastern Region.
Delegates from New Juaben South are now voting at Koforidua Secondary Technical School.
Eastern Regional Secretary of the NPP, Kofi Osei Agyei, and the Regional Election Director of the party, Michael Oteng Adu, spoke to the media after casting their votes stating that apart from the incident at Asene Manso Akroso, the entire exercise is ongoing smoothly.
The NPP’s National Delegates Congress is a crucial event for the ruling party as it will shape the party’s leadership and direction.
The flagbearer vote is keenly contested by four hopefuls: Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia ,Assin Central MP, Kennedy Ohene Agyapong, Former Food and Agriculture Minister, Dr. Owusu Afriyie Akoto, and Former Mampong MP, Francis Addai-Nimoh.
The chosen candidate will go head-to-head with ex-President John Dramani Mahama, who secured the endorsement of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) earlier this year.
It’s significant to note that this election is taking place as the NPP enters its eighth year under the leadership of President Akufo-Addo.
The party aims to overcome historical trends, as no political party in Ghana has secured more than two consecutive terms under the Fourth Republic, spanning from 1992 to the present.
This flagbearer decision holds significant implications for the NPP’s chances in the 2024 general election, and the nation’s political landscape is set to witness an intense contest in the months to come.
