Bill Proposing to Remove 15% VAT on Menstrual Hygiene Products Introduced to Parliament | Parliament

A private member’s bill proposing an amendment to remove the 15 per cent Value Added Tax (VAT) on menstrual hygiene products has been introduced to Parliament.

The proposed bill seeks to amend the VAT (Amendment) Act, 2022 (Act 1082) to remove the VAT on sanitary pads and tampons.

In an interview with Peace FM news, The National Democratic Congress (NDC) Member of Parliament (MP) for Madina, Francis-Xavier Sosu who proposed the bill to parliament, said that the proposed bill to Parliament will help eradicate the 15% VAT imposed on the sanitary pads.

He, therefore, said that there are no taxes on condoms and why are taxes on sanitary pads which helps in promoting good hygienic conditions among women.

He added that they have presented this bill to help remove the VAT on the sanitary pads to help improve good hygiene among women.

He, therefore, called on his fellow female Members of Parliament to partake in the push to remove the 15% VAT imposed on the sanitary pads.

He said that no tax amendments can be reintroduced and urged the government to rely on alternative revenue and improve on efficiency in tax collections.
