In a significant political shift, over 1500 supporters of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) have defected to the New Patriotic Party (NPP) in the Nsawam Adoagyiri Constituency, Eastern Region, with the name "Hasken Zabarma".
Leading the group, Munkaila Garibah, also known as Home Boga, explained in an interview with Peace FM's Eastern Regional Correspondent, Michael Akrofi, that their decision was influenced by the development projects the government has undertaken in their Zongo community.
Garibah stated that they had previously voted against the NPP due to a long-standing narrative from their elders, claiming that the NPP would repatriate them if voted into power; a claim they now believe to be false.
"We were told by our elders in the Zongo community to vote against the NPP or risk being expelled if they came to power. Despite voting against them, Hon. Annoh Dompreh, our MP, has continuously brought development to us and never neglected us. We now realize that the NPP is the party that can truly help us, which is why we have all decided to leave the NDC", Munkaila Garibah said.
He urged eligible voters to support Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia and Hon. Annoh Dompreh by voting massively for the NPP in the upcoming 2024 general elections.
Hon. Frank Annoh Dompreh, MP for the area and also Majority Chief Whip expressed his gratitude to the party executives, community elders and the entire Zongo community for their unwavering support and commitment to the NPP.
He emphasized that the decision to join the NPP was voluntary, reflecting the genuine will of the people.
Highlighting the NPP's achievements, Hon. Annoh Dompreh pointed to various infrastructure developments in the Zongo community including the construction of an astro turf pitch and a library. He underscored these initiatives as evidence of the NPP's dedication to improving the lives of the Zongo community members and their respect for the Islamic faith.
He further remarked that the defection of over 1500 NDC supporters signifies the NPP's progress and predicted that more people would follow suit, describing the situation as a "political Jihad" in which the defectors are choosing to protect their religious values through their political support for Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia and the NPP.
Hon. Annoh Dompreh concluded by urging both Christians and Muslims to rally behind Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia due to his achievements and vision, describing him as a universal candidate who appeals to all Ghanaians.
He expressed confidence that the NDC will face a significant defeat in the 2024 elections to Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia.Michael Akrofi/Peace News
