The Minority Leader of Parliament and Member of Parliament (MP) for Ajumako-Enyan-Esiam, Hon. Ato Forson, has assured workers in the informal sector that the next National Democratic Congress (NDC) government will introduce a thorough pension scheme tailored specifically to their needs.
Addressing a large gathering of Identifiable Stakeholders and Groups, particularly, artisans, seamstresses, hairdressers, and other workers during a community engagement event in Kasoa on Friday 11th October 2024, the Minority Leader highlighted the NDC’s commitment to improving the livelihood of those in non-formal employment.
The MP emphasized that workers in the informal sector, which comprises a significant portion of the nation’s workforce, have long been excluded from formal pension schemes. He noted that under the NDC’s proposed policy, workers such as hairdressers, seamstresses, artisans, and others in similar fields would be able to contribute to a pension system that would secure their future after retirement.
He explained that the policy would enable workers to enjoy retirement benefits, offering them financial stability in their old age. Forson stressed that this initiative is part of the NDC’s broader agenda to extend social protection to all Ghanaians, regardless of the nature of their employment.
The informal sector has been a major contributor to the economy but has lacked access to many of the benefits enjoyed by those in formal jobs. Mr Ato Forson’s assurance comes as the NDC continues to roll out policies that seek to bridge the gap between formal and informal workers, focusing on equity and inclusive development.
Ato Forson also criticized the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) and its candidate, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, describing their manifesto as a mere faccedil;ade of false promises. In sharp contrast to the NDC’s vision, which he described as filled with robust and actionable policies, Mr. Forson indicated that the NPP manifesto is replete with lies and rehashes of broken promises with the aim of hoodwinking Ghanaians. According to him, the NDC’s proposals are intentionally designed to address the real obstacles faced by the populace, especially those in marginalized communities, unlike the deception paraded as solutions by the NPP.Josephine Acheampomaa/
