Dec 7 Elections Come to the Discussion Table Not on the Streets EC Urges NDC

The Electoral Commission believes that the best way to ascertain the credibility and integrity of the 2024 Voters Register is the discussion table, not on the streets.

"Taking to the streets will not ensure a credible register. It will only cause tensions and suspicions which are unwarranted. We call on the former President, His Excellency John Mahama, an eminent and respected statesman of the Republic, to encourage and bring his party to the table as that is the best place to address issues and ascertain the truth regarding the Voters Register," the Commission said.

The Electoral Commission has come under severe criticism from the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) over the discrepancies that was identified during the Voters exhibition exercise organised by the Commission from the 20th of August, 2024 through to the 27th of August, 2024.

According to the NDC, the current voters’ register is not fit for purpose due to the anomalies recorded during the exhibition exercise, thereby, calling for a forensic audit into the register.

In an official report in relation to the Provisional Voters register released by the EC on September 12, 2024, the Commission noted that, the discrepancies being pointed out by the NDC are things the Commission had already started working at resolving.

In an earlier meeting with the NDC on September 6, 2024, the Electoral Commission stated, “The Commission indicated at the meeting that these discrepancies were being resolved. The commission again highlighted that the essence of the Exhibition Exercise was to correct any discrepancies in the Provisional Voters Register before it was finalized for the General Election.

The Commission further noted that, they are putting measures in place across all their District Electoral Offices to make sure that whatever data they get are properly scrutinized and cross-checked properly before the final voters’ register is released, adding that, almost all the discrepancies identified have to date been corrected. 

“As in 2020, the Commission is committed to providing the country and all political parties with a robust and credible Voters register that will guarantee free, fair, transparent and credible General election in December 2024. We urge the public to trust the EC to do this again and again,” the EC emphasised.
