Professor Kofi Agyekum has waded into discussions regarding Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh's comments about Dr. Kwame Nkrumah, Ghana's first President and the leader who led the nation into independence in 1957.
Addressing a mammoth crowd of New Patriotic Party members and supporters during his official unveiling in Kumasi, Ashanti Region, Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh a.k.a NAPO made some statements affecting Dr. Kwame Nkrumah which many people find insulting to the image and reputation of Ghana's political legend.
He said; “Since independence from 1957 till today, we’ve not had any president that has helped Ghana like Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo. I say from 1957 till today, you can bring your Kwame Nkrumahhellip; no president has protected Ghana and moved the country forward like Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo.”
Reacting to these comments during Peace FM's "Kokrokoo" show, Professor Kofi Agyekum, Head of Linguistics at the University of Ghana, questioned the reason(s) why NAPO would disparage Dr. Nkrumah.
To him, speaking against Nkrumah is speaking against the lot of Ghanaian beneficiaries of Nkrumah's projects, hence left to him alone, Dr. Opoku Prempeh should have not dragged Nkrumah's name through the mud.
He described NAPO's statements as uncouth and admonished the New Patriotic Party's leadership to manage him well going forward.
Opanyin Agyekum, as he is affectionately called, advised NAPO's handlers to write his speech for him if he is not good with public speaking.
"Sit NAPO down and train him...This should be a lesson for him!", he exclaimed.Ameyaw Adu Gyamfi/
