With the launch of the Tap & Go Transport Initiative, Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia has declared that corruption in state-run intracity and intercity transportation will soon be eliminated.
Modernizing the process of booking a seat on public transportation and paying for it afterwards is the goal of the government-private investor-run Tap & Go Transport Initiative.
This program is designed to make it easier for passengers to pay for their fares by allowing them to load money onto their Tap & Go Transport cards or accounts.
Fund diversion will be successfully reduced thanks to this novel tactic, which Dr. Bawumia stressed will streamline fund collection procedures.
At the program's introduction, he disclosed that Metro Mass Transit's revenue has increased since the Tap & Go Transport Initiative was implemented.
“It is significant to note that, before the tap-and-go system was implemented by Metro Mass Transit, the audit report showed that the organization was losing 50 per cent of its revenue annually but since it was implemented by the organization, that leakage has been plucked and the revenue that it is making from 200 buses is more than when it was operating 500 buses.”
Dr Bawumia also promised to expand its use to other modes of public transportation, such as commercial buses known as trotros, which he believes will eliminate mistrust in the system among drivers and mates, vehicle owners and drivers.
“With the tap and go system, the problem of vehicle owners worrying about the accurate daily takings and whereabouts of their cars at any given time will be a thing of the past. The problem with the diversion of funds within state-owned intercity and intracity buses will also be a thing of the past, as it will help check corruption by promoting transparency”.
