Afua Asantewaa Owusu Aduonum, the Ghanaian women's rights advocate, journalist, and event organiser who captivated the nation with her singing marathon Guinness World Record attempt, has revealed she has been hospitalised since concluding her effort on December 29, 2023.
The 33-year-old, who halted her singing marathon world record attempt after 126 hours and 52 minutes due to health concerns, explained she is in hospital to restore her sleep cycle after staying awake for five days during the sing-a-thon.
"I'm in a very comfortable hospital ward to'tune my system back to how it was before because I denied myself sleep for five days," she told 's United Showbiz on December 30, 2023, describing it as "a comfortable hospital place which is like an apartment."
Mrs. Aduonum, recently named Tourism Ambassador of Ghana, clarified that she hasn't received any intravenous drips as part of her treatment.
Medical reasons for conclusion
Initially planned for December 24 to 27, 2023, Asantewaa's Sing-a-thon was extended to account for potential time deductions by Guinness World Record judges for breaks.
Dr. Grace Buckman, who led Asantewaa's medical team, commended her efforts and expressed surprise at her persistence.
Dr. Buckman initially planned for the sing-a-thon to conclude at noon on Friday, December 29, but advised an earlier stop on Friday morning due to fatigue and prioritizing Asantewaa's health.
"However, there's only so far you can go as a person... She's done 126 hours, let's give her a round of applause. She's done so well, we're all proud, she's put Ghana on the map and made the music industry proud," Dr. Buckman stated.
"But as a medical team, her health is our top priority now, and we need to ensure she's okay. We would have loved her to go until noon, but as a medical team, we need to stop it and protect Afua as much as possible. Fatigue has set in, and we'll now work on getting her well and ready to bounce back and address everyone again."
