Malawi Arrests Dozens At Corruption Protests | General News

At least 33 individuals have been arrested at demonstrations in Malawi, together with the organisers, after police accused them of inciting violence.

People annoyed with rising residing prices and government corruption joined the protests, which started within the cities of Blantyre and Zomba on Thursday, earlier than spreading to the capital metropolis of Lilongwe on Friday.

They say cupboard ministers and senior government officers already beneath corruption investigation should be investigated, not simply fired or compelled to resign.

Earlier this week Agriculture Minister Lobin Lowe and his deputy, Madalitso Wirima, had been sacked for alleged incompetence and negligence by the president.

According to the presidency, the agriculture ministry had did not comply with appropriate procedures when attempting to supply fertiliser from a British agency, which has since demanded a fee price of about $725,000 (£627,000) from Malawi regardless of the contract being cancelled.

The government is now paying this sum regardless that they're getting nothing in return. Multiple newspapers in Malawi - together with the Nyasa Times and the Times of Malawi - alleviate the government was duped. The firm has not commented publicly on the claims.

Despite the arrests of protesters on Friday, extra anti-government rallies are deliberate within the northern metropolis of Mzuzu.
