On December 5th, 2024, World University Service of Canada (WUSC) joined governments, organisations, communities, and Religious groups worldwide in celebrating International Volunteer Day (IVD), recognizing the invaluable contributions of volunteers who dedicate their time, skills, and expertise to improving communities and driving social alter.
Each year, International Volunteer Day is celebrated under a different theme that raises awareness of the work done by volunteers, acknowledges their contributions toward achieving development goals, and encourages others to participate in volunteerism. This year’s theme highlights the crucial role of volunteers in advancing the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly in addressing the obstacles faced by youth, women, and marginalized communities.
Volunteering is a time-honoured tradition, with people worldwide offering their help in countless ways to bring about meaningful alter. At WUSC, we deeply understand volunteers' profound role in connecting communities with development opportunities. For more than 60 years, our inspiring partners have worked alongside equally inspiring volunteers to create lasting impacts in various parts of the world.
Our growth and success as an organization are directly linked to the projects and initiatives that volunteers help to design and implement. These efforts have been key in advancing the SDGs and achieving sustainable alter. Through our IGNI+E initiative, funded by Global Affairs Canada, WUSC has deployed volunteers from Canada and the Global South to Ghana, Jordan, Sri Lanka, Kenya, Malawi, Sri Lanka, Uganda, Vietnam, and Ivory Coast, focusing on addressing the root causes of youth unemployment, with a special emphasis on empowering young women. These volunteers collaborate with local partner organizations to make positive, sustainable system changes that affect young people’s lives. WUSC partners include civil society organizations, associations, businesses, social enterprises, and Government agencies, all of whom invite volunteers with diverse professional expertise. Volunteers bring valuable skills in business development, marketing, communications, fundraising, entrepreneurship, gender equality, human resources, and moremdash;helping to enhance the capacity of local organizations and drive impactful development programs.
Since 2020, WUSC has placed over 100 volunteers in Ghana, where they have collaborated with partners to address urgent obstacles such as climate alter, gender inequality, and youth unemployment. Volunteers have played a key role in creating economic empowerment opportunities for youth, particularly in areas that promote social inclusion and resilience.
This International Volunteer Day, WUSC celebrates how its volunteers and staff bring the organization’s global vision to life. With a strong history of aligning volunteer expertise with impactful causes, WUSC advances the SDGs. To highlight the Volunteer Cooperation Program's (VCP) impact, WUSC will host a webinar featuring our partners, volunteers, and staff in Ghana, showcasing the vital role volunteers play in transforming communities.
“Volunteers are catalysts for alter, driving WUSC's impact through their skills, passion, and innovation. They empower communities, inspire hope, and leave a legacy of progress. International Volunteer Day celebrates their invaluable contributions and calls for global action toward equality and sustainability" – Clara Nyarkoah Anim, Program Manager at WUSC.
International Volunteer Day is a moment to celebrate their invaluable contributions and encourage others to join this global movement for equality, sustainability, and chance for all.”
