Cocobod Transitions To Soilless Technology To Revolutionize Cocoa Seedling Production

The Ghana Cocoa Board (Cocobod) has introduced a groundbreaking shift in cocoa seedling cultivation, replacing traditional topsoil with an innovative soilless medium. This move is expected to significantly enhance cocoa production in Ghana while promoting sustainable agricultural practices.
Innovative Medium Developed Locally
The new medium, Miracle-Gro Potting Mix, is the result of a collaboration between Ghanaian agricultural innovation firm Chrysfibre and logistics provider Admus Logistics. Comprising organic materials fortified with essential nutrients, this product is designed to deliver optimal growing conditions, improve seedling survival rates, and accelerate cocoa maturity. The medium also incorporates high moisture retention, effective aeration, and recyclable containers, replacing the previously used single-use polythene bags.
Commitment to Sustainability and Innovation
Cocobod’s adoption of this innovation aligns with its goal to mitigate environmental degradation caused by illegal mining and topsoil extraction. According to Dr. Alfred Arthur, Deputy Executive Director of Cocobod’s Seed Production Division, the soilless medium is not only environmentally friendly but also enhances seedling quality.
“This medium, made from cocoa husks and fortified with slow-release fertilizers, is lighter, reusable, and promotes better root and leaf development. It also ensures seedlings can withstand long-distance transport,” Dr. Arthur said.
This initiative underscores Cocobod's broader mission to advance sustainable cocoa production while improving farmer livelihoods.
Nationwide Capacity Building
To ensure effective implementation, Cocobod has initiated nationwide training for its regional managers, cocoa station officers, and technical staff. The training, conducted at Akyem-Tafo in the Eastern Region, focused on the properties and field application of the soilless medium.
Evans Eshun, Administrative Officer at Chrysfibre Limited, emphasized the importance of these sessions:
“Our objective is to equip technical officers with the information and skills to maximize the potential of this medium. By doing so, they can train others and drive widespread adoption,” he stated.
Hands-On Demonstrations
Practical training sessions led by Michael Obeng Opoku, Oyoko Cocoa Station Officer, demonstrated the preparation and application process. Participants were guided through filling recyclable receptacles, planting cocoa seeds horizontally, applying fertilizers, and ensuring proper watering techniques.
Opoku highlighted the sustainability benefits, noting, “This alternative eliminates the need for topsoil extraction, significantly reducing land degradation.”
Research-Backed Efficacy
The Cocoa Research Institute of Ghana (CRIG) certified Miracle-Gro Potting Mix in 2019, endorsing its suitability for cocoa seedling production. Studies confirm the medium can nourish plants for up to six months, further validating its efficacy.
Positioning Ghana as a Cocoa Leader
Cocobod’s transition to soilless innovation represents a significant stride toward sustainable cocoa farming. This initiative not only strengthens Ghana’s position as a global cocoa leader but also sets a precedent for environmentally responsible agricultural innovation.
