The Ghana AIDS Commission has raised alarm over the lack of resources in the National AIDS Fund, leaving the country dependent on the Global Fund to sustain treatment and care for individuals living with HIV/AIDS.
Speaking during an awareness campaign in Accra on November 23, 2024, on the theme "Take the Right Path #EndAIDSNow," Dr. Ernest Amoabeng Okyere, President of Ghana HIV/AIDS and Acting Chairman of the Country Coordinating Mechanism of the Global Fund, stressed the urgent need for government intervention.
"As we speak, the National AIDS Fund is empty, and all our efforts are currently supported by the Global Fund. Without additional funding, the fight against HIV/AIDS could face a crucial setback," he said.
Dr. Okyere revealed that over 25,000 people are receiving treatment, but without sustainable funding, their access to care is at risk.
He urged the government to prioritise investment in the National AIDS Fund to ensure continuous support for victims and prevent disruptions to ongoing programmes.
The campaign, organised by the Ghana AIDS Commission in collaboration with the Ghana Health Service and political parties, highlighted the alarming rates of infection and mortality in the country.
According to recent statistics, 12,000 people died from HIV/AIDS last year, with 35,000 new cases diagnosed between January and September this year alone.
Dr. Kyeremeng Atuahene, Director of the Ghana AIDS Commission, reinforced the need for public awareness and education while warning against stigmatisation.
He reminded the public that discrimination against persons living with HIV/AIDS is a violation of Ghana's laws, urging victims of such acts to report them to the Commission.
