Whats The Difference Between Miss World And Miss Universe

If you’re new to beauty pageants, you might be curious about the difference between Miss World (MW) and Miss Universe (MU). Are they the same thing? Why do we have two big pageants?

These are common questions because both events are globally famous for showcasing beauty, talent, and grace. Despite their similarities, Miss World and Miss Universe have distinct branding and focus.

Miss World centres on its motto, “Beauty with a Purpose.” It stresses humanitarian efforts, social impact, community outreach and charity as key elements of the competition. Its contestants are judged on their dedication to making a difference alongside their beauty and talent.

Miss Universe celebrates beauty through its message, “Confidently Beautiful.” It focuses on empowering women to express confidence, individuality, cultural inclusivity and self-assurance.

Miss World operates from London, under Miss World Limited while Miss Universe is based in both New York City and Bangkok, overseen by the Miss Universe Organisation (MUO).

Both pageants are glamorous and prestigious, but their differences go beyond the crowns and gowns. Each has its own history, judging process, and mission, making them distinct in the world of pageantry.

History

Miss World

Miss World began in 1951, created by Eric Morley in the United Kingdom. As the oldest international beauty pageant still running, it holds a special place in the world of pageantry. After Eric’s passing in 2000, his wife, Julia Morley, stepped in to co-chair and has continued to lead the event.

Miss Universe

Launched in 1952 in the United States, Miss Universe has experienced an captivating journey of ownership. Former U.S. President Donald Trump owned the pageant from 1996 to 2015, after which it was acquired by IMG. Today, it is owned by Anne Jakapong Jakrajutatip, a successful Thai businesswoman who advocates for LGBTQ+ rights.

Global Reach

Miss World focuses on humanitarian efforts and awards six Continental Queens representing different regions while Miss Universe is known for its massive audience reach, broadcast in 190 countries with over 500 million viewers.
