The Director of Elections and IT for the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Dr. Edward Omane Boamah, has described as “a great step towards Peaceful elections”, the political parties’ engagement with the rank and file of the Election 2024 security taskforce led by the Inspector General of Police (IGP), Dr. George Akuffo Dampare.
The Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Dr. George Akuffo Dampare, on Thursday, 21st November, 2024, met with political parties ahead of the December 7 Presidential and parliamentary elections.
The purpose of the meeting was to discuss and finalise security arrangements for the upcoming elections which is being fiercely contested by the two leading political parties, thus, the ruling New Patriotic Party(NPP) and the largest opposition side, the National Democratic Congress(NDC).
At the meeting, IGP George Akufo Dampare assured the various political parties of the security apparatus’ readiness to ensure a peaceful, transparent, free and fair elections, void of any chaos, hence, calling on the various political parties to go the extra mile in making sure that they join in the peace campaign.
During the meeting, the IGP assured the parties of a thorough and robust security plan to ensure a peaceful, free, and fair election. He emphasized the importance of trust and collaboration between the police, political parties, and other stakeholders in achieving a successful electoral process.
Reacting to the statements of assurance from the IGP, Dr. Omane Boamah posted on his official Facebook page stating that, “It's obvious the rank and file of the security services are fed up with the economic mismanagement and avoidable hardships Ghanaians are suffering and are determined to repeat the zero tolerance for thuggery approach (which they adopted during the Assin North by-election) in this election.”
“As was made clear at the meeting, the Inspector General of Police is the sole Commander-in-Chief of the National Elections Security Task Force.
"This being the case, only Police, Immigration, Prisons, Customs and Fire Service personnel ("without lethal weapons") will be providing security at the polling stations during the December 7 presidential and parliamentary elections,” he added.
The IGP further highlighted the extensive measures being put in place to protect and promote law and order before prior to, during and after the polls.
Dr. Akuffo Dampare also noted that strict security standards will be enforced at collation centres to prevent obstacles and ensure an orderly process.
Reacting to Dr. Dampare’s statement, Dr. Omane Boamah said, "should there be the need for any military intervention, it is only the Inspector General of Police, acting as the Commander-in-Chief of the Elections Security Task Force who can authorise military action.”
He, therefore, called on the Ghanaian electorates to vote massively for the NDC.
