NCCE Expresses Dissatisfaction With Lack of Interest In Community Engagement Sessions Among Parliamentary Candidates

The Chairperson of the National Commission for Civic Education (NCCE), Madam Kathleen Addy, has expressed concern over the low participation of parliamentary candidates in community engagement sessions organized by the Commission.

These engagements provide a platform for political candidates, constituents, and other stakeholders to interact. They offer an chance for politicians to present their policies while allowing voters to voice their concerns and ask crucial questions.

Ms. Addy noted that many parliamentary candidates fail to attend these sessions, often citing excuses despite the significant resources invested by taxpayers to support such initiatives. She described this behaviour as a missed chance and a waste of public funds.

Speaking at a media engagement, she explained that the goal of these engagements is to enhance political accountability, promote peaceful coexistence, bridge communication gaps between electorates and their representatives, educate voters on the roles and responsibilities of Members of Parliament, and strengthen democracy.

Calling on politicians to take their responsibilities seriously, Madam Addy urged them to prioritize these engagements as a crucial aspect of the democratic process.

Speaking about feedback from the sessions, Madam Kathleen Addy highlighted that key concerns raised by constituents include issues related to education, health, roads and infrastructure, the economy, and agriculture.

The NCCE continues to advocate for greater participation and commitment from all political candidates to ensure these engagements fulfill their purpose of fostering a more accountable and responsive political system.Sika Ayim/Peace FM Newsroom
