Mahama Collapsed NHIS But We Have Revived It Bawumia

NPP flagbearer, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia says the National Health Insurance Scheme has been revived and strengthened by the government.

The National Health Insurance Scheme was introduced by the New Patriotic Party under the John Agyekum Kufuor regime but the scheme suffered payment issues when the National Democratic Congress took over power and promised a one-time premium.

Addressing stakeholders of Suame Constituency in the Ashanti Region on Sunday, Dr. Bawumia said the NPP inherited the scheme which had been collapsed by the John Mahama government but it has been revived under this administration.

''The National Health Insurance Scheme was virtually collapsed under Mahama but we have revived and strengthened it. We have put in so much moneyhellip;Today, sicknesses that were not under the NHIS are today under the the NHIS. Childhood cancer that is children with cancer is now free under he National Health Insurance Scheme."

"Sickle cell sufferers also have a drug they use called hydroxy urea. It is a very expensive drug but very potent for sickle cell sufferers. We have negotiated and we are giving these drugs to sickle cell sufferers free under the NHIS."

Dr. Bawumia also announced that after a successful six-month pilot of free kidney dialysis under the NHIS scheme for persons over 60 and under 18, kidney dialysis will from December 1, 2024 be free.
