The University Teachers Association of Ghana (UTAG) has responded to the allegations levelled against the Association by the National Youth Organiser of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Salam Mustapha.
He asserted that UTAG’s strike is fueled by the largest opposition party, the National Democratic Congress (NDC).
The National Secretariat of UTAG stated that, the allegations made by Salam Mustapha where he described UTAG as being in bed with the NDC as unfounded and lacks merits.
In a press release dated 30th October, 2024, UTAG maintains that the Industrial strike embarked on by the Association is in the best interest of every Ghanaian.
"We categorically refute any allegations of political collusion or ulterior motives behind our recent industrial action to demand a nationwide ban on mining and prospecting for gold and other minerals in water bodies, forest reserves and farmlands,” UTAG stated.
UTAG’s response comes in the wake of a press statement issued by the National Youth Organiser of the NPP, Salam Mustapha who alleged that, UTAG’s strike is motivated by the NDC, citing the venerable Political science lecturer, Professor Ransford Van Gyampo as one person who is doing the bidding for the NDC.
Mustapha Salam further added that, the strike action by UTAG was meant to disenfranchise students ahead of the December 7, 2024 Presidential and Parliamentary elections.
"How could Prof. Gyampo and the NDC be said to have influenced the decision of respected members of UTAG to declare the industrial/strike action?"Kobina Darlington/
