Bawku Conflict CJ Shuts Down 7 Courts Over Insecurity of Judicial Staff

Following the recent escalation of violence in Bawku, a suburb in the Upper East region, the Chief Justice, Her Ladyship Gertrude Torkornoo, has ordered the immediate closure of courts in the Upper East Region.

This decision comes after court staff and judges expressed concerns about their safety and security amidst the conflicts that has erupted in recent times in Bawku.

According to the communique from the office of the Chief Justice, the closure will remain in effect until further notice.

In a statement issued by the Judicial Service Secretary, Justice Cyra Pamela Koranteng JA, on Tuesday, October 29, urged registrars to secure all court assets and advised staff to prioritise their safety.

More than 20 lives have been reportedly lost in a renewed chieftaincy clash leading to a worsening situation as the country prepares to go to the polls on December 7, 2024. .

The Ghana Police Service has also increased its security presence along the Bolga-Tamale highway following a recent shooting incident.

Reports gathered noted that the conflict erupted following the rival chief, Alhaji Seidu Abagre from exile.

It is in view of the above that the following courts have been closed down by the Chief Justice:

2. Circuit Court, Bolgatanga
3. District Court, Bolgatanga
4. District Court, Zuarungu
5. District Court, Zebila
6. District Court, Garu
