Repair Works On Kasoa Overpass Expansion Joints Start Today

The Ministry of Roads and Highways has begun maintenance works on the Accra-bound Carriageway of the Kasoa Overpass.

The remedial works, which started yesterday, are as a result of the damages caused to the expansion joints, which are crucial members of the bridge structure.

"The maintenance works commence on Monday, October 28, 2024, at 6 a.m. and the team will use 10 days to complete the works," a statement signed by the Director of the Department of Urban Roads, James Amoo-Gotfried, said.

The remedial work on the Accra-bound Kasoa overpass is the second to be undertaken by the Ministry of Roads and Highways in recent times following the deterioration of their joints, thereby posing a danger to motorists.

The first one was the Atomic Junction Flyover, which had the covering of the expansion joints exposed as a result of the frequent use of the bridge.

The carriageway, the ministry said, was expected to be opened to traffic on Wednesday, November 6, 2024.

The statement said traffic on the Accra-bound would be diverted to the ground level beneath the overpass during the period of work.

It said motorists were also encouraged to use the Kasoa-Nyanyano bypass as an alternative.
 
“During the maintenance period, all motorists are expected to adhere to the traffic management plans being implemented,” it said.

The statement said the ministry and the Department of Urban Road, through which the work would be executed, would like to apologise for any inconvenience the works would cause.

Thus, it said they were committed to ensuring that works were completed on schedule.

The works on the Atomic overpass scheduled from October 3 to 22, have since been completed and the roads reopened.

This exercise was undertaken following the Daily Graphic’s report and complaints from the motoring public about the threat and inconvenience the state of the roads was causing.

Works involved the replacement of worn-out metals used between the joints with bituminous plugged joints to allow for smooth passage without any effect.

The maintenance and repair works were executed by the Bridge Maintenance Unit of the Ghana Highway Authority (GHA).
