The flagbearer of the All People's Congress(APC) has assured executives of the Ghana Union Traders Association(GUTA) of duty free at the Port when elected as President on December 7.
At a meeting in Accra, the founder of the All People's Congress pointed out that duties at the Ghanaian port are the highest in the whole world, which is having a negative impact on businessmen and women.
According to him, the over 25 import duties at the Port have driven businessmen and women to Togo, where they have free Port, which has led to the government losing a chunk of revenue at the Port.
Dr. Hasan Ayarega is of the view that the high cost of goods and commodities in Ghana is a result of the excessive monies being collected at the Port.
He added that under his leadership as a president, importers will have to pay 5 duties at the Port and will be in Ghanaian cedi. Port charges, shipping charges, Ghana Revenue, income taxes, and levy.
Dr. Joseph Obeng, President of the Ghana Union Traders Association, admonished that the free Port Policy by Dr. Hassan Ayarega is the game changer for the trading community.
According to him, it will allow them (trading community) to do projections on the goods that they are importing into the country.
He added that the flat rate system will help decrease corruption at the port, and the government can use it as a catalyst to generate revenue.
Dr. Joseph Obeng seized the chance and called on all the flag bearers in December 7th general election to come and sign an MOU with GUTA so they can commit with the promises on the Port.
