Minority Majority Brouhaha It Is a Super Messy Situation Atik Mohammed

Policy Analyst and a former General Secretary of the People’s National Convention, Atik Mohammed, has described the ongoing impasse in Ghana’s parliament as a super-messy situation following the legal battles between the Speaker of parliament, the judiciary and the now 'minority' side of parliament.

Atik Mohammed’s comment is in reaction to an earlier happenings in Parliament where the former majority caucus staged a walk out of parliament on Tuesday morning, October 22, 2024, when the former minority caucus, now referred to as the 'majority caucus' had taken their seats at the right hand side of the Speaker.

Prior to the ruling by Speaker, the majority Leader and member of parliament for Effutu, Alexander Afenyo- Markin had petitioned the Supreme Court to seek for clarity on the position of the constitution on the members of Parliament who have decided to contest as independent candidates, after a former minority leader, Haruna Iddrisu triggered the conversation during a political rally.

Speaking on Peace FM’s 'Kokrokoo' morning show on Tuesday, October 21, 2024, Atik Mohammed expressed his greatest displeasure at the turn of events as the country prepares to go to the polls in two months.

He said, “It is a super-messy situation. It is messy on many levels. On the level of of the Supreme Court, it is messy. On the level of parliament, it is messy and on the level of the politicians too, it is messy.”

According to him, there was no need to have sought for clarity at the Supreme Court when the constriction was explicitly clear on what would warrant a seat to be declared vacant, adding that, the Speaker, Alban Bagbin, acted in all fairness in accordance to the constitution, hence, the verdict of the supreme to overturn the speaker’s ruling is quite unfounded.Kobina Darlington/
