The running mate for the 2024 Presidential candidate of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh has stated that, the government of Nana Addo Danquah Akufo Addo was sadlled with a bad economy by the erstwhile National Democratic Congress-led John Dramani Mahama government in 2016.
But the current Akufo-Addo/Dr Mahamadu Bawumia administration, has been able to turn things around in a remarkable function, despite these obstacles, he said. He added that they have made notable strides toward macroeconomic stabilisation, with significant improvements in key areas such as inflation, debt restructuring, and fiscal consolidation.
According to Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh, an economy is fundamental to the growth of every country, but Ghana's economy under former President Mahama, saw a downward spiral leading to the cancellation of Nursing Trainee allowances and delayed payment to teachers who were owed for nearly three (3) years.
During an exclusive interview with Kwami Sefa Kayi on Peace FM's "Kokrokoo" morning show, on Wednesday, October 16, 2024, the ormer Energy and Education Minister, maintained that the success of every economy must be reflected in individual growth as human beings, but that was never the story under the NDC government.
"Ghana’s economy must be advantageous to all Ghanaians. There are countries who have experienced tremendous economy growth but the citizens do not have the freedom to enjoy the economic growth. A lot of such events have happened in communist’s countries and countries where the leader is a dictator. Women were not permitted to go to school nor work neither were they allowed to engage in any meaningful venture.
"Economic growth should be translated to the welfare and wellbeing of the individual people, including the environment, however, the truth is that, when power was handed over to Nana Addo Danquah Akufo Addo in January 2017, the Economy was already in shambles. The previous government had lied its way through to IMF with policies they knew very well that they will not be able to follow through to the latter," NAPO added.
Speaking further, he stated that, Ghana, under the leadership of former President Mahama was subjected to perpetual darkness for four (4) years leading to the fold up of very promising businesses which led to the laying off of workers but the job owners could not pay their workers due to the law rate of production.
"The former President, John Dramani Mahama, at the time of leaving office, boldly told the then incoming President that the economy has been left with crumbs," NAPO added.
The NPP's Vice Presidential candidate touted the sectoral performance of the economy under the leadership of President Akufo-Addo and Dr Bawumia, saying there has been significant improvements as industry, agriculture and services, all experienced measurable growth.Kobina Darlington/
