Mahamas Govt Issued More Small Scale Mining Licences Than Now Minerals Commission CEO

The Chief Executive Officer of the Minerals Commission, Martin Ayisi, has revealed that former President John Dramani Mahama issued more small-scale mining licenses than the current President, Nana Akufo-Addo.
This revelation has reignited discussions surrounding the management and regulation of the mining sector in Ghana, particularly regarding small-scale operations.
Mr Ayisi issued a documents to the Government Assurances Committee of Parliament chaired by the North Tongu Member of Parliament, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa.
The CEO noted that the increased number of licenses granted during Mahama's tenure has contributed to the ms current obstacles.
He emphasised the need for responsible mining practices and better oversight to ensure that small-scale mining activities do not lead to environmental degradation and social issues.
The Minerals Commission has faced criticism over the rise of illegal mining, commonly known as "galamsey," which affects the environment and local communities.
