The call for President Akufo-Addo to crack the whip on galamseyers following the destruction caused by activities of illegal mining on the environment, especially on water bodies and the forest reserves, has seen a surge.
Recently joining the call and fight against galamsey is the NPP Member of Parliament for Subin, Eugene Boakye Arhin who has boldly opened up to the President to take decisive and stringent measures against government officials who have failed to effectively fight the menace of galamsey.
In an interview with Joy News on Thursday, 3rd October, 2024, the vociferous Subin lawmaker expressed his utmost displeasure over the rate at which the major water bodies and forest reserves are being destroyed by the very few in society, thereby exposing the majority of the population to life threatening activities.
The radar has been on the illegal activities since time immemorial, however, the effect being felt by majority of Ghanaians in recent times has called for the need to impress upon the government to seize all forms of small scale mining activities.
There have been calls from several labour unions across the country, including the Ghana Medical Association, Ghana Registered Nurses and Midwifery Association.
In Eugene Boakye Antwi’s view, the continued degradation of the environment poses a significant threat to the livelihoods of many Ghanaians, particularly those in rural areas who depend on these resources for their daily survival.
According to him, all government officials who have not only failed to implement existing policies effectively but have also allowed illegal mining operations to flourish under their watch should be called out and made to face the punitive measures.
"If we know the people doing the illegal mining, if they are party people or political opponents, let’s walk in there and get them arrested and make them face the law. This party will be better served in government than in opposition because of the corrupt or illegal position of certain employees."
"We are not going to condone it. I am an NPP person and I am not going to sit here and condone an illegality. Something that I have not been part of, why should I come and support or defend it," he insisted.
The Subin MP's view contradicts that of other NPP MPs who believe that any attempt to deal with galamsey at this time will cause the party to lose votes in the impending general elections.
