Demo Against Galamsey Police Service Urges Demonstrators to Abide by the Public Order Act

The Public Affairs Directorate of the Ghana Police Service has issued a press release regarding the intended demonstration by a group of demonstrators called Concerned Citizens Against Galamsey. 

The Group, after series of meetings with the Ghana Police Service planned to embark on a three day demonstration beginning from Thursday, October 3 through to Saturday, October 5 to register their concerns about the devastating impact of illegal mining activities, popularly known as galamsey. 

There was a similar demonstration by Democracy Hub which resulted in the arrest of some protesters by the Ghana Police Service for allegedly flouting the laws. 

The arrest has generated heated conversations in the public space with some describing the actions of the police as unlawful. 

In view of that, the Ghana Police Service, in a press release dated Wednesday, October 3, 2024, highlighted specific routes the demonstrators are expected to take and the responsibilities all demonstrators are to adhere to avoid any undesired eventualities. 

Excerpts of the statement read, "During Police engagement with the organisers, the Police reminded the organisers of their responsibilities under the Public Order Act. which includes being held liable for any damage caused to any public property during the demonstration; any person taking part in the demonstration shall obey the directions of the Police safeguarding the proper movement of other persons and vehicles and generally sustain order, and any person taking part in a special event shalll conduct himself in such manner as to avoid causing obstruction of traffic, confusion or disorder."Kobina Darlington/
