The Chairperson for the Electoral Commission of Ghana, Madam Jean Mensa has debunked allegations that the discrepancies in the Provisional Voter Register (PVR) are deliberate attempt by the EC to disenfranchise voters in certain parts of the country.
In an engagement with the various political parties on Tuesday, October 1, 2024, Jean Mensa stated that, the EC has no interest in disenfranchising persons who have attained the age of voting, and have sound mind, as prescribed in the constitution.
“It is significant to note that the discrepancies initially identified in the PVR cut across all regions. Allegations that the discrepancies in the PVR were aimed at disenfranchising voters in certain parts of the country are without merit. It is not true,” Jean Mensa said.
The EC’s comments come on the heel of discussions within the public space where the largest opposition party, the National Democratic Congress (NDC) raised alarm over certain anomalies detected in the voter’s register during the exhibition of the Provisional Voter register.
The NDC complained about some names which where illegally transferred, whiles some names were not captured in the register. This generated concerns across the country with the NDC calling for an independent forensic audit in order to have a robust and credible elections.
The EC chair noted that the need for a forensic audit is rather premature stating, adding that the legal administrative processes have not been exhausted.
The Commission maintains that they are committed to ensuring that all registered voters exercise their Democratic rights of casting their votes in their respective polling stations.
