Ghanas Economy Now Better Than How Mahama Left it UG Economist

Development Economist and a Senior Research Fellow at the Centre for Social Policy Studies (CSPS) at the College of Humanities, University of Ghana, Dr. George Domfe, has indicated that the current growth rate of the Ghanaian economy is far better than Mahama left it.

“Ghanaians may still be going through tough times but the current state of the economy is far better than it was when John Mahama was leaving office” he indicated.

According to him, per capita income now is better than when Mahama was in office.

“The standard of living of Ghanaians at the moment is higher than when the NDC was in power. Per capita income under Mahama was $1900. As we speak, it is $2200. This simply means that, Ghanaians today, though there are still some obstacles, are better off than they used to be under Mahama” he observed.

He also noted that Mahama’s economic record is the worst the country has experienced since 1992.

“In 2013, the economy recorded a decline as it dropped from 11% to 7.3%. In 2014, it further dropped to 2.8%” he said.

He further pointed out that the worst economic record experienced by Ghanaians happened under the Mahama administration.

“Our worst economic record occurred under Mahama. In 2015, we experienced a further decline in growth as the economy grew at 2.1%. This precipitated the Senchi Economic Forum which resulted in Ghana going to the IMF for a bailout”

With the current growth rate of 6.9%, Dr. Domfe held that this is an indication of the fact that even under some obstacles, the economy under the Akufo-Addo/Bawumia administration, has performed better than Mahama.
