Police Commended For Professionalism During Democracy Hub Demo

The Ghana Police Service has earned a commendation for its professional conduct during the Democracy Hub protest.
Despite tensions escalating as protesters defied a court order and caused significant disruption at the 37 Roundabout in Accra, the police have been praised for their restraint and strategic management of the situation.
The protest, initially organized to highlight concerns over illegal mining popularly known as galamsey, took a disruptive turn when demonstrators blocked major roads, vandalized properties and tore down political paraphernalia belonging to the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP).
The police, tasked with maintaining order, had set up barricades to prevent the protesters from advancing toward the Revolutionary Square, a designated security zone.
Despite provocation and the chaotic atmosphere, the police exercised notable restraint.
Their approach minimized violence and maintained public safety, preventing the situation from deteriorating further. The professionalism displayed by officers helped to de-escalate tensions, ensuring that the demonstration did not spiral into more serious confrontations.
Ghanaians, particularly those directly impacted by the disruption, have expressed their appreciation for how the police handled the situation, ensuring minimal harm while upholding the rule of law.
Many have highlighted this as a positive shift in the police’s handling of protests, a contrast to past instances where clashes with demonstrators have led to accusations of excessive force.
The police’s measured response is seen as a significant step in building trust between law enforcement and the public, especially in politically charged situations.
The force managed to restore order without undermining the right to protest, demonstrating their commitment to maintaining peace and stability in the capital.King Edward Ambrose Washman/
