NDC Demo Police Commences Investigation into Kumasi Shooting Incident

The National Democratic Congress’ September 17 Demonstration was largely peaceful until an alleged shooting incident occurred at Kumasi, resulting in the injury of a police officer who was on duty ensuring the safety of the demonstrators.

In a quick response, the Ghana Police Service has announced that it has commenced investigations into the shooting incident.

Reports gathered by led some public outbursts when the police, in an attempt to disperse the fiery crowd, deployed teargas.

The National Democratic Congress embarked on a nationwide demonstration to express its discontent on how the Electoral Commission was handling matters of the voters register, which is a major document for ensuring a credible election come December 7.

However, during the Kumasi edition of the “Enough is Enough Demo”, some errant youth clashed with the police force in an attempt to invade the premises of the Electoral Commission.

In a statement issued on Tuesday, the police said, “The demonstration ended peacefully in all locations except an isolated incident at Kumasi in the Ashanti region. In Kumasi, contrary to the arrangements agreed between the Police and the organisers, the demonstrators attempted to push their way into the premises of the Electoral Commission and pelted the Police with stones.”

“The Police managed to bring the situation under control and calm was restored. However, one Police officer was injured during the incident and he is receiving medical attention. The Inspector-General of Police, Dr. George Akuffo Dampare, has reached out to him via a telephone call and wished him well. The Police have since commenced investigation into the incident.”

“The Inspector-General of Police and the entire leadership of the Police Service would like to express their profound gratitude to all Police officers across the country for their continuous patriotic dedication and commitment to security, law, and order in our beloved country,” it added as a way of expressing appreciation to stakeholders.Kobina Darlington/
