The Focal Person for the Sustainable Ocean Plan (SOP),Dr. Felix Addo-Yobo has urged Ghanaians to refrain from polluting water bodies with waste and detrimental chemicals.
He emphasized that these practices jeopardize the health and safety of citizens, highlighting ongoing efforts to protect the nation's water resources.
Dr. Addo-Yobo made these comments during an interview with Peace News at the National Consultation Meeting on Ghana’s Sustainable Ocean Plan, which aims to raise awareness and ensure sustainable practices for ocean and water body conservation.
He elaborated that the Sustainable Ocean Plan (SOP) is not just about raising awareness but also implementing measures that will ensure the long-term preservation and responsible management of water bodies across the country. He emphasized that the protection of Ghana’s oceans and water resources is essential to safeguard marine life, support local economies, and protect public health.
Additionally, Mr. Nana Joojo Solomon, President of the National Fisheries Association of Ghana and the National Canoe Fishermen Council, stressed the importance of stronger law enforcement to ensure the success of the Sustainable Ocean Plan.
Mr. Nana Joojo Solomon further added that the lack of strict enforcement of laws surrounding environmental protection has led to the persistent degradation of water bodies. He called on relevant authorities to intensify their efforts to curb pollution, illegal fishing, and other detrimental activities that threaten marine ecosystems. By doing so, he believes the Sustainable Ocean Plan will have a higher chance of success, securing the future of Ghana’s waters for generations to come.
Both leaders agreed that collaboration between the government, local communities, and environmental stakeholders is essential to realizing the goals of the Sustainable Ocean Plan.
