Dec 7 Election EC Must Ensure Electoral Sanctity John Mahama

The flagbearer of the largest opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC), John Dramani Mahama has concord with Chiraahene, Barima Mintah II in calling for peace after the election results are declared by the Electoral Commission after the December 7 elections.

According to the former President John Mahama, the sanctity of the December election is largely dependent on the Electoral Commission, adding that, the election must not be sacrificed since the Commission has an oversight responsibility in ensuring that fairness and transparency is attained.

Posting on his official X page on Monday, September 9, 2024, Mr. Mahama said, “I agree with Nana Chiraahene, Barima Mintah Afari II that the sanctity of the December election must not be sacrificed as the Electoral Commission has the responsibility to guarantee that sanctity.”

Mr. Mahama’s comment comes on the wheels of a recent visit to Chiraa in the Bono region, where the Chiraahene, Barima Mintah Afari II, called on the Electoral Commission to ensure that every form of post electoral violence is avoided by maintaining a posture of transparency, fairness and integrity.

However, the NDC has called for an independent forensic audit of the voters’ register with reasons being alleged discrepancies found in the register during the just ended voters’ exhibition exercise.

John Mahama wrote, “our repeated calls on Jean Mensa and the Commission to ensure fairness and free elections persist to be rebuffed, but as Nana Chiraahene stated, the Commission must be careful to avoid plunging this country into chaos due to its avoidable mistakes and actions.

“The call for a forensic audit of the voter register is not a demand of the NDC alone. It is a legitimate demand from all peace-loving Ghanaians who desire a free, fair, and peaceful election on December 7.

The demand for the audit must and should unite us all in our quest for electoral integrity.”Kobina Darlington/
