In a daring operation, the Assin Fosu District Police Command arrested Isaac Akwasi Agyei, a 38-year-old man, for impersonating an Electricity organization of Ghana (ECG) staff member and defrauding customers in the Assin South District in the Central Region.
The suspect, Agyei’s modus operandi involved wearing ECG attire and targeting customers in Assin Kwafo-krom and Appiah-krom communities, claiming to be a disconnection officer for revenue mobilization.
He demanded Ghcent;50 from customers with exceptional debts above Ghcent;200.00, threatening disconnection if payment was not made.
In some cases, Agyei took it a step further by removing service wires from meters and accepting alternative forms of payment from customers who couldn’t afford to pay.
However, his scheme was unraveled when victims became suspicious and reported him to the assembly member, leading to his arrest and detention in police custody.
The General Manager of the Central Region, Emmanuel Lumor, has been informed of the incident and is urging customers to be vigilant of fraudsters posing as ECG staff.
