Galamsey Fight No Angel Will Come from Heaven to Preserve Our Water Bodies for Us Prof Joseph Osafo

Prof. Joseph Osafo has cautioned Ghanaians against engaging in and encouraging illegal mining, known in local parlance as "galamsey".

Galamsey has over the years been the bane of Ghana's economy, destroying the water bodies and contaminating the environment.

Successive governments including the Akufo-Addo administration have all mostly pledged to curb this mining menace but to no avail as it continues to fester and pose major threat to lives.

A recent report in the dailies and other media outlets reveals River Pra being polluted by galamsey activities.

There is a warning from the Ghana Water organization Ltd about an impending danger.

"About Sixty percent (60%) of the catchment capacity is silted as a result of illegal mining (galamsey) compromising the quality of raw water. We are currently recording an average turbidity of 14,000 NTU instead of 2000 NTU designed for adequate treatment," a statement by the organization read.

The Ghana Water organization Ltd (GWCL) further warns that these illegal activities are causing “severe inconveniences” to residents in areas like Cape Coast, Elmina and their environs.

The organization called on “all interest groups to join the fight against galamsey on the River Pra especially during this festive period”, stressing “your assistance is crucial in helping us restore the quality of the raw water and ensure a reliable water supply of clean drinking waterhellip;”

Senior Psychologist, Prof. Joseph Osafo, speaking on Peace FM's 'Kokrokoo' morning show, feared the potential dangers of this development on Ghana.

He advised Ghanaians to keep watch over their water bodies and, to those encouraging the galamseyers, he warned them to desist from such behaviour.

"God has given us this universe in trust and we must understand that no Angel will come from Heaven to preserve our water bodies for us, weed our backyards for us, drain our systems to prevent mosquito bites nor fit our potholes for us. Human beings have a responsibility for their collective good," he said.Ameyaw Adu Gyamfi/
