The Chief Executive Officer of the State Transport Cooperation (STC) and the Vice Chair of Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia’s campaign team, Nana Akomea has chided the flagbearer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), John Dramanui Mahama over his 24-hour economy policy.
Nana Akomea stated that the opposition party’s 24-hour economy mantra has remained unexplainable by some members of the NDC.
Nana Akomea explaind that, before the 24-hour economy can be functional in Ghana, certain conditions ought to have been met, amongst them is a drastic reduction in electricity tariffs.
Speaking on Tuesday, August 27 edition of the 'Kokrokoo' morning show on Peace FM, Nana Akomea stated, "We don’t just get up to run a 24-hour economy. We run a 24-hour economy because it is profitable. If you are making profit from our enterprise, then you can opt to run a 24-hour economy as does by some business ventures.”
“24-hour economy is the result of demands,” he added.
The stalwart of the NPP opined that, the 24-hour economy mantra by the opposition National Democratic Congress has been reduced to nothing but mere theories with reasons being that, the flagbearer of the NDC, John Dramani Mahama has not expounded the policy to the understanding of the ordinary Ghanaian.
Nana Akomea’s statement is in reaction to the manifesto launched by the NDC on Saturday, August 24, at the University of Education, Winneba, in the Central region where the flagbearer, John Mahama outlined a number of interventions his government, if voted come December 7, will implement.
Top of the policies of the NDC is the introduction of the 24-hour economy which the party explains that to be same job which will be done by three people spanning across three shift systems.
However, Nana Akomea maintains that, it is not every kind of job that will require a 24-hour system, hence, the decision to enact a legislation to make it mandatory is totally flawed.
"This 24-hour economy is not a policy that warrants the enactment of legislation to protect it.”
“If you consider the policies of the NPP establishing a 5 million solar panels for 2000 megawatt of solar power, this is a policy that requires a 24-hour system because there will be a high demand on solar energy. With the latest discovery of Lithium, which is one of the minerals used in the manufacture of the batteries that will provide power for the solar panels.”
"Bawumia has said he is going to enact laws that will promote the patronage of made in Ghana products. This will mean that all Ghanaians will be required to buy made in Ghana products. What then happens is that, there will be high demand for made in Ghana products which means, there will be a need for a 24-hour economy. But if you don’t tell us what you will do with your 24-hour economy, then you don’t know what you’re talking about,” Nana Akomea said on Peace FM’s 'kokrokoo' morning show.Kobina Darlington/
