Abolishing Betting Tax Is Not a Good Idea Dr Bawumia Told

Governance Lecturer at the Central University, Dr. Benjamin Otchere-Ankrah has kicked against the abolition of betting tax.

It could be recalled that the Akufo-Addo government introduced a 10% tax on the net income of gamblers.

To the government, this will help in enhancing the country's development but to the stakeholders, the tax is a burden.

In view of this, the presidential candidate of the New Patriotic Party(NPP), Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, in his 2024 manifesto, has pledged to cancel both the betting tax and E-Levy to alleviate the plight of Ghanaians.

Former President John Dramani Mahama also, during the launch of his youth manifesto has promised to abolish the betting tax.

But to Dr. Otchere-Ankrah, it is a wrong call to cancel this tax.

"Let the tax remain. It may even serve as a disincentive to people to engage in betting. If it would be a part-time job, fine, but as long as you earn, you have to also contribute to the national coffers," he expressed his disagreement on Peace FM's "Kokrokoo" show.
