The Flagbearer of the NPP, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, has revealed that his government will significantly increase the daily allowance of prisoners.
Currently, prisoners are on a daily feeding allowance of GH 1.80 Cedis per day, and for some time now, the amount has remained unchanged.
But speaking in Oda, during his campaign tour, Dr. Bawumia expressed strong concern over the amount and revealed that the amount will be increased to GH 6 Cedis per day from next year, by his government.
Dr. Bawumia also expressed a strong commitment to improving prison infrastructure and the general welfare of prisoners, including medicare and rehabilitation.
"My government will improve prison infrastructure to enhance rehabilitation of prisoners and also enhance the rehabilitation of prisoners through more effective training," Dr. Bawumia said.
Dr. Bawumia has often shown personal support to the Ghana Prisons Service over the years, by coming to their aid in many areas.
Two years ago, Dr Bawumia personally sponsored the re-wiring of electrical cables of the Kumasi Central Prisons following a direct appeal to his office.
He also supported the Prisons Service through the construction of portable water systems in many prison facilities, to serve both inmates and officers.
