Withdraw All Services Leadership of CETAG Tells Members

The ongoing impasse between the members of the Colleges of Education Teachers Association of Ghana (CETAG) has taken a downward turn as the leadership of CETAG directs all members to withdraw all their services following government’s decision to freeze their July salary.

In a statement sighted by , the leadership of CETAG urges members not to attend meetings and congregation programme as well as cease all academic related activities including provision of academic counselling and supervision of students at their various halls of residence.

The call from the leadership of CETAG is stemmed from a directive issued by the Minister for Education, Dr. Yaw Osei-Adutwum to the Controller and Accountant General not to validate salaries for July 2024 of the teaching staff of the colleges of education due to their ongoing strike.

Excerpts of a letter dated July 23, 2024, of CETAG stated, "Leadership has referred the illegal directive to freeze our July salaries to our lawyers to take the essential action on it immediately."

It is recalled that, Ghana Tertiary Education Commission called on the ministry to withhold salaries of the members of CETAG; a call greatly supported by the National labour Commission.

Meanwhile, the National Labour Commission (NLC) has backed the decision by Ghana Tertiary Education Commission (GTEC) to freeze the salaries of the teachers.

In an interview with JoyNews, Ofosu Asamoah, the Executive Secretary of the National Labour Commission said, "This is like two elephants fighting and I feel so sad about it. The court has injuncted the strike, yet they are continuing with the strike. With that, it makes the strike illegal because the court says 'this strike is not right, so stop'.

"When it becomes an illegal strike, the law provides that they should not be paid for the period they engaged in the illegal strike."
