Take Him Out of The House Ill Not Entertain Such Disrespect Angry Speaker Sacks Sefwi Wiawso MP

NPP Member of Parliament for Sefwi-Wiawso, Dr. Kwaku Afriyie, was marshalled out of Parliamentary proceedings by the Speaker of Parliament, Rt. Hon. Alban Sumana Kingsford Bagbin, over what he describes as ‘disrespectful’ comments.

During proceedings in Parliament on Monday, July 22, 2024, the Member of Parliament for Sefwi-Wiawso, Dr. Kwaku Afrityie was said to have made some comments which did not sit well with the Speaker of Parliament.

The legislator was held in contempt for accusing the Speaker of making prejudicial statement on the LGBTQ+ case that is before the Supreme Court of Ghana.

The Speaker, thus, described the comment by the Sefwi-Wiawso lawmaker as “rude”, hence calling on the marshal of Parliament to usher the MP out of Parliament.

Dr. Afriyie had said, “With all due respect to your chair, this preliminary remarks you are making are presidential and I believe that as representing the good people of Sefwi-Wiawso, it doesn’t lie in your mouth to remind us of the things that you have said.”  

In response to the comment, Speaker Bagbin said, “This is a completely rude remark and I can send you out of the House. It lies in my authority to do so. I represent the whole country, you represent the good people of Sefwi-Wiawso. Please Marshal take him out of the House, I will not entertain such disrespect.”

He added that, "in giving you the information, I have given you an idea of the expectations of the people of Ghana. That is for you to consider as part of the report and the House to decide as to whether we will approve or disapprove those nominations."

"His Excellency clearly stated that he is constitutionally injuncted to do what he has done, and so it is now for you to also look at."

But the Speaker seems to have heard it and ordered that the Sefwi0-Wiawso MP vacate the chamber.

"Marshal, take him out of the House. I will not entertain such disrespect. It lies in my mouth," he exclaimed.
