The Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT) has called on politicians to create jobs now or risk agitations and demonstrations before the end of this year.
The General Secretary of GNAT, Thomas Musah Tanko said this in reaction to the report by the statistical service on job creation in Accra.
Figures from the Ghana Statistical Service (GSS) indicate that 1.9 million youth have no employment, no education and training while 1.2 million female also have no training and education.
Over 790,000 of male also have no education, employment and training, according to the GSS report.
The Ghana Statistical Service projected in its report that the situation could be dire if government fails to act swiftly.
On June, 11, 2024, the Speaker of Parliament, Alban Bagbin, expressed concern about the state of unemployment among the youth.
He predicted that it could result in demonstrations and agitations, especially with the upcoming elections.
After a month of his pronouncement, the Mr Tanko fears the situation could escalate.
He cited the report by the GSS indicating that duty bearers should act fast.
“Whatever we can do to take the youth out of this situation, it must be done, and it must be done now, let no politicians take this thing for granted,” he said.
He added that despite the policies by government to create jobs, more has to be done.
“When your policies are doing well, the people themselves will tell you, what you see here is a clear indication of danger. Nobody should praise himself; this one is a clear danger”.
He asked the President Akufo-Addo and politicians to help forestall any impending danger.
“The constitution says sovereignty resides in the people, so if people should commit their sovereignty and delegate that power to you to act for and on their behalf, you cannot say that you have delivered. When you have delivered, they know because they are the principals, so what I am saying is that we are sitting on a time bomb,” Mr Musah cautioned.
