NUGS Rolls Out Stipends Scheme For PWDs

The National Union of Ghana Students (NUGS) under the auspice of its Scholarship Board introduces a policy that serves as a relief of financial issues to Tertiary University students with special needs. 

The policy termed “The NUGS Stipends Scheme” is targeted at Persons With Disabilities (PWDs) across public universities in Ghana.

Speaking ahead of its official launch on Monday, the initiator, Daniel Oppong Kyeremeh, the President of NUGS said the project seeks to provide monetary support to help students who find it challenging to eat, cloth themselves or have books to study as well as other pertinent needs.

"The Union in the past months has received several students at its secretariat with issues of insufficient resources to sustain a healthy diet and to fulfil other basic needs of life", the NUGS President disclosed.

Mr Kyeremeh said from the ongoing experiences it had become obvious that many students are facing similar obstacles in the public universities of Ghana. 

He noted that the issue had become pressing and therefore it was essential for NUGS to come to the aid of such students.

"This project also seeks to support the government’s passion towards the provision of quality education to the people of Ghana", Mr Kyeremeh emphasised.

The NUGS President noted that Sustainable Development Goal 4 talks about attaining quality education.
 
This, he stated includes students having peace of mind to focus on their education. 

The Stipends Scheme Project, Mr Kyeremeh noted seeks to promote the attainment of the SDG goal 4.

Other Activities:

Detailing some of the projects aside from the Stipends Scheme, Mr Kyeremeh said his outfit is determined to explore all other avenues to make life bearable for Ghanaian students across Ghana and beyond the shores of the country. 

Currently, he said NUGS were involved in large-scale farming.

This, he noted would soon be turned into business so that while they feed students with the produce they could sell the rest to have income to cater for other needs of Ghanaian students.

"We are currently cultivating cassava, maize and some vegetables on some ten (10) acres of land and we also have 1000 pieces of catfish as we plan to expand in no time to serve the purpose we have in mind", Mr Kyeremeh stressed.
