EC and Security Forces Committed to Ensuring Free Transparent Elections EC Chair Pledges

Madam Jean Mensa, the Chairperson of the Electoral Commission has reiterated the Commission’s commitment of ensuring a peaceful and incident free electoral process before, during and after the December 7, elections.

According to the EC Chair, working closely with the security agencies is the surest way to ensure a peaceful election, thus, calling on the various security agencies and forces to come together to work for the peace of Ghana.

Madam Jean Mensa acknowledged the enormous contribution of the Ghana Police Service and other security agencies and in ensuring a peaceful, transparent and credible elections over the years.

According to her, the Commission has over the years, enjoyed police presence in all the registration Centers and Police also provided security for their mobile teams when they moved around the country.

Madam Jean Mensa said that all the electoral activities undertaken ahead of the 2024 general elections have been inclusive and successful due to the cooperation of the security agencies.

During an engagement with the security task force at the EC head office in Accra on Monday July 8, 2024, she stated that, “I’m happy to note that all the activities we have undertaken so far have been very successful and inclusive and all citizens who wished to register had the chance to do so. We couldn’t have done this without the cooperation of our security agencies.

“We had meetings with the IGP and National Security Task Force, and I would like to recognize the amazing work they have done so far.

“We’ve enjoyed fruitful collaboration with them and that has led to the fruitful exercises we have had so far,” Jean Mensa said.

She added “We enjoyed police presence in all our registration Centers and Police also provided security for our mobile teams when they moved around the country. I would like to pledge our commitment to always work with the security agencies to ensure our objectives of ensuring free and transparent elections are achieved”.

The IGP, while addressing the patrons at the meeting said, “We are grateful to the public and the EC and all other stakeholders for the cooperation we have had from them so far. I will persist to urge them to support the police in ensuring that Ghana continues to be the beacon of hope for the continent and beyond. This is the only country we have and we need to ensure it’s always at peace”.

Meanwhile, the Commission has said that it is going to conduct a mop-up voter registration exercise from August 01 to August 03, 2024.

The exercise is to afford persons who were unable to register during the limited registration exercise as well as persons who turned 18 after the completion of the registration to register.

The mop-up registration will follow a voter exhibition from August 20 to August 27.

She said, “I would like to put on record that the mop-up of the voter registration exercise will take place from August 1–3, 2024, and it is to afford persons who turned 18 after May 29 or persons who have not previously registered the chance to get onto our register; this goes to persons who are eligible.”
