Women Network For Peace, a Non-Governmental Organization has expressed its disgust at the leadership of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) over its failure to condemn the harsh treatment meted out to a student of the Christian Service University last week the security detail of the Former President and some members of the party.
The WNP is equally surprised at the apparent silence of the Former President, His Excellency John Mahama in whose presence the incident occurred for failing to call out his assigns in the interest of peace and security in the country.
Master Richard Asiedu, a student of the CSU was last beating to pulp by some members of the opposition party during a public lecture by the Former President after the student reportedly objected to some assertions by the former President during the course of his presentation.
The student, who is currently receiving treatment having suffered severe bodily harm at the hands of followers of Mr. Mahama, was said to have raised objection to some claims by the Former President which did not go down well with supporters of the party.
Since the incident, both the leadership of the NDC and Mr. Mahama have failed to comment on the matter despite the overwhelming condemnation by section of the public.
The latest to add to their voice to calls for the opposition party and its flagbearer to address the issue is the Women Network for Peace, an organized group of women advocating for peace and security in the Ghanaian society.
According to the President of the Network, Diana Oppong Mensah, the attitude of the Former President and the NDC does not augur well for peace and tranquility ahead of the December 7 polls, stressing that failure to condemn the act was not only worrying but can also heighten political tension in the country.
"Under no circumstance should anybody support such action by supporters of the NDC; we need to be tolerant with each other and use dialogue to resolve our differences instead of resorting to violence", she noted.
The WNP believes Former President Mahama and the NDC have missed a glorious chance to demonstrate their commitment to peaceful elections by failing to condemn the sordid act.
