NDC Member of Parliament (MP) for Tamale Central constituency, Murtala Mohammed, has censured the Majority Caucus in Parliament for consistently missing out on Parliamentary duties since the House reconvened on Tuesday, June 11, 2024.
According to the legislator, some NPP Parliamentarians opted to join the campaign tour of the various regions by the party's flagbearer over discharging their responsibilities duties in the chamber.
Hon Murtala Mohammed made these assertions on the floor of Parliament on Thursday, June 13, where he stated that, the lack of seriousness is very visible among the majority caucus of Parliament.
He underscored the need to eschew the culture of absenteeism in any institution, especially, Parliament, adding that, it undermines the functioning of parliament and reduces its ability to fulfill its constitutional mandate.
In a direct address to the Majority Leader and Member of Parliament for Effutu, Alexander Afenyo-Markin, Murtala Mohammed criticised him for failing to ensure adequate attendance of his caucus members to parliament.
Buttressing his opinion, Murtala Mohammed argued that, it is the sole responsibility of the majority leader to rally all members of his caucus to fully participate in parliamentary proceedings on behalf of the constituents who elected them to come and represent their interest in Parliament.
Murtala said, “My point has to do with the unseriousness of the team that he [Alexander Afenyo-Markin] leads. They are only seven. [Wednesday, June 12], they were just five. Now, you think that it is significant for us to do business without members of the Majority?"
“I came to Parliament by eight o’clock and registered. Your members are still not here. They are following your presidential candidate dancing Azonto and saying, give me the steer. If you want us to take you seriously, then have control over the people that you lead," he said.
