Member of Parliament(MP) of Effutu constituency in the Central Region and the Majority Leader in Parliament, Hon. Alexander Kwamena Afenyo-Markin has admonished the media, which is the fourth estate, to focus on matters of national interest as the country approaches the December 7 general elections instead of engaging in partisan politics targeted towards dividing people.
The majority leader implored journalists to engage in impactful journalism, more especially as Ghanaians prepare to elect a new President and parliamentarians.
Hon. Afenyo-Markin posited that, with the country heading to the polls in December, it is crucial that the press highlight topics that will impact the well-being of the Ghanaian people.
The Minority leader added that, the media has what it takes to ensure a refined reportage while seeking to have a political discourse.
He said this on Monday, June 10, 2024 on the floor of Parliament where he advised against confrontational and unproductive debates.
He said, “When we come on your airwaves and we are shouting, yelling at each other, and insulting, stop us. Remind us that, honourable, this is not the way to go.”
He emphasised the media’s duty to the public, urging them to act as a check on political rhetoric and ensure that the conversation remains focused on tangible outcomes and community needs.
He said, “What are the issues? Your people need schools. Your teachers need laptops. There is poverty in your backyard. What are you doing to promote industry? So that we don’t come and be doing the name-calling, and we think that we can take the people for granted. We should help.”
In line of ensuring accountability and probity, Afenyo-Markin called on journalists to sustain their watchdog role by holding the government accountable while also acknowledging its achievements.
He added, “It’s an election year, nothing stops you from commending government on its major breakthroughs. Whereas you also point to us the obstacles in the various communities. For me, we need this. We need this so that we can attend to the people.”Kobina Darlington/
