The Kofi Annan International Peacekeeping Training Center (KAIPTC), in collaboration with the German Foreign Ministry, has organized a pivotal one-week course on Electoral Violence and Security (EVS) for 84 personnel from various security services.
This initiative aims to tackle electoral violence in West Africa head-on by arming law enforcement agencies with robust prevention, management, and response tactics.
During a media interview, Air Commodore David Akrong commended all participants for their dedication to the course and underscored its significance. He highlighted how the EVS curriculum provided a thorough understanding of recent instances of electoral violence, the dynamics of election cycles, election security protocols, gender and human rights considerations, clerk assignments, and the principles of community policing.
Akrong urged participants to leverage the information gained during this intensive week-long training to ensure peaceful elections.
He extended his gratitude to the Inspector General of Police, the Police Service, and the lead facilitator for their instrumental roles in making the course a success.
The presence of Deputy German Ambassador Madam Sivine Jasen added further weight to the occasion. Madam Jasen emphasized the crucial role of free and fair democratic elections in sustaining democracy. She revealed that the German government not only funded the entire course held at Kofi Annan but also pledged support for subsequent sessions scheduled in Kumasi and Tamale.
Madam Jasen underscored the German government's commitment to ensuring unbiased media coverage during elections. Beyond financial support, they organize training programs for journalists to uphold journalistic integrity and impartiality, thereby preventing biased reporting from influencing public discourse.
