Cocoa Producer Price COCOBOD Has Failed Us Atik Mohammed

Atik Mohammed has taken a shot at the Ghana Cocoa Board (COCOBOD) following the increase in producer price of cocoa under the Akufo-Addo government.

Producer price of cocoa has seen a surge of 58.26 percent, rising from GHcent;20,928 per tonne to GHcent;33,120 per tonne which took effect from Friday, April 5th, 2024.

The government has further approved a revision of the buyers’ margin to GHcent;2,980 per tonne for the 2023/24 cocoa season.

This adjustment aims to mitigate the impact of increased finance costs for Licensed Buying Companies (LBCs).

Though, to government, this is a good news to cocoa farmers in the country which therefore should reflect the good works of COCOBOD, Atik Mohammed thinks otherwise.

The former PNC General Secretary says on Peace FM's morning show "Kokrokoo" that COCOBOD has failed Ghanaian cocoa farmers abysmally and crippling the cocoa sector despite the increase in producer price of cocoa.

Atik blasted the management of COCOBOD stressing they have mismanaged the institution.

"COCOBOD as an institution has failed. COCOBOD as an institution is in serious crises...Currently, the production levels are low and there is concern about the money to pay the farmers and so forth. When you take COCOBOD, it's cash-trapped," he said.Ameyaw Adu Gyamfi/
