A Gs Office Directs Police To Investigative Alleged Child Marriage at Nungua

The Office of the Attorney-General and Minister of Justice has called on the police to conduct investigations into the alleged marriage between a 12-year-old girl and a 63-year-old chief priest at Nungua in the Greater Accra Region.

The directive was contained in a statement signed on April 2 by deputy Attorney-General and Minister for Justice, Diana Asonaba Dapaah.

The statement said the act is in contravention of the Children's Act 1998 (Act 560), which states 18 years as the minimum age for marriages of whatever kind.

The statement further states that persons who contravene the Act must face the law.

"The allegations, if proven, constitute a criminal offence for which all parties involved must face prosecution. We would appreciate it if you could cause your outfit to conduct the essential investigation of the alleged child marriage to enable our office to do the needful,” she stated.
