GRNMA Suspends Strike As NMC Reverts to Previous Verification Fee

The Ghana Registered Nurses and Midwives Association (GRNMA) have decided to suspend its planned strike action following the Nursing and Midwifery Council of Ghana's (NMC) decision to sustain the previous verification fee.

Last week, the GRNMA had threatened to strike if the NMC increased the verification fees from GHcent;550 to GHcent;3,000.

However, after discussions with government officials, the NMC has decided not to implement the fee hike, leading to the suspension of the strike.

Dr. David Tenkorang-Twum, the General Secretary of the GRNMA, stated in an interview with Peace FM News that they are willing to accept a maximum 25% increase in fees, emphasizing that anything beyond that would be unacceptable.

He assured members of ongoing dialogue with leadership and collaboration with stakeholders to ensure that any revised Verification Fee is equitable and agreeable to the nursing and midwifery community.

Additionally, the GRNMA called on the Ministry of Health to eliminate discriminatory practices regarding the sale of clearance forms to nurses and midwives.

Dr. Tenkorang-Twum urged the Ministry of Finance to promptly issue the essential Financial Clearance for the employment of the countless nurses and midwives who have been unable to find work since graduating in 2020, emphasizing the urgency of addressing this issue to prevent the waste of valuable skills and talents.
