The Minister of Communications and Digitalization, Ursula Owusu Ekuful has stated that the the National Communications Authority (NCA) is not responsible for the ongoing internet disruption being experienced across the country.
There was a total internet blackout on Thursday, March 14, across the country.
Explaining to Ghanaians in an exclusive interview on Peace FM on Wednesday, March 20, the Communications Minister revealed that, there was a break on the fibre optic cables 5 kilometres deep in the sea.
Ursula Owusu Ekuful added that, her office is yet to ascertain what caused the damaging of the subsea cable and fibre optic cables but added that, there might have been a landslide in the sea that might have caused the damaging of the cables.
"The fibre optic cables that provides internet to Ghana got damaged 5 kilometres under sea level in Ivory Coast. Due to the depth where the cable was laid, it is unlikely that a fishing vessel could cause such a damage neither could it be the actions of mermaids as has been the perception of some individuals."
The minister expressed astonishment as to how five cables that provide internet could be destroyed at the same time reiterating that, there could be a major disaster in the sea that could cause this massive disruptions.
She assured Ghanaians and customers that the ministry and its related agencies are working assiduously to find a remedy to the internet disruptions.
Earlier, the minister announced on the floor of Parliament that, engineers have been sent to work on the cables adding that, the internet will be restored to its full capacity after five weeks.
Hon. Ursula Ekuful reiterated that the disruption is not a regularity failure.Kobina Darlington/
