ECG Cuts Power to Parliament House Over GHS23m Electricity Debt

Electricity supply to Ghana's Parliament House and Job 600, the office complex for Members of Parliament, has been cut off due to an exceptional debt of GHS23 million.

The disconnection, carried out by the National Taskforce on Thursday, February 29, is part of the ongoing “Operation Zero Balance” initiative by the Electricity organization of Ghana (ECG) to recover unpaid debts from various customers.

Efforts to collect the debt from the parliamentary facilities were unsuccessful, leading to the disconnection. 

The outage lasted for a couple of minutes before power was restored through a generator

Meanwhile, Nana Amoasi IV, Executive Director of the Institute for Energy Security (IES), has warned of persistent power cuts in Ghana unless immediate action is taken to address underlying obstacles related to installed capacity and fuel supply. 

These issues, he emphasised, significantly affect the country’s power sector.

The inconsistent power supply, particularly in the capital city, Accra, has caused disruptions in daily life. Despite this, the Electricity organization of Ghana (ECG) has not provided a clear explanation for the outages or a load timetable for public planning.
